Counselor/Field Teacher
Do you enjoy time outdoors? How about spending a summer in Maine? Share your love for the outdoors with children by spending a season working at one of our four 4H Camps and Learning Centers in Maine. With activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, archery, shooting sports, conservation education, high & low challenge courses, climbing wall, sailing, 4H camps have something for everyone! Each camp is hiring for spring, summer or fall positions. Whether your passion is hunting and fishing, hiking and canoeing, sailing, leading wilderness adventure trips or spending time with our youngest day campers, we have a position for you. Our camps are located across Maine and position opportunities vary at each location. With easy access to some great outdoor recreation opportunities, spend your days off exploring the rocky shoreline of the Maine Coast or the mountains and lakes of interior Maine or New Hampshire. We offer spring and fall programming for local schools as well as day and residential summer camp programs.
Each site has between 10 to 30 staff and 50 to 120 campers who attend one to four week sessions during the season. Each employment season ranges from 6 to 12 weeks and positions are available for any combination of seasons.
Staff are in charge of supervising and managing their assigned group, planning and leading session specific programming and maintaining the health and safety of their campers. Staff guide their group and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities, with an eye towards meeting the needs of each camper. Some positions include the opportunity for training and/or certification in a specific area including: Lifeguards, Shooting Sports Instructors, Wilderness Trip Leaders and Wilderness First Aid.
Responsibilities:
Work directly with campers ages 5-17
Plan and lead lessons, mentor campers and provide opportunities for campers to learn and explore the outdoors through high-quality experiences
Supervise and assure safety and well-being of all campers, students and chaperones
Manage risk associated with experiential learning opportunities
Additional Information About University of Maine 4H Camps
Dates of Employment: The summer season runs from Mid June until Early or Mid August depending on the location.
Staff Compensation: Salary Ranges from $350 - $550 per week depending on position. Room and board is available at some locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of 18 years of age and have graduated from High School by June 2022
Previous experience working with children preferred
Interest or experience in various outdoor activities including hiking, canoeing, fishing, sailing and many more
Minimum of Basic First Aid and CPR required (training available for summer season)
Willing to live and work in a community setting
