Captain
JOB SUMMARY
The Captain position begins in shipyard (Seattle, WA) over the winter months prior to the summer 2025 Alaska Sailing Season. This is a year-round position working 4 weeks on the vessel with 4 weeks off the vessel.
The Captain in the key leader of the Vessel Leadership Team (VLT - a group of leaders assigned to lead all aspects of each vessel). The Captain directly oversees onboard managers, and indirectly manages crew, ensuring the safe and professional delivery of UnCruise Adventures’ published cruise products. The Captain provides excellent and proven leadership, safety, and communications skills with all company employees, partners, vendors, and travel industry professionals. This position reports to the Director of Nautical Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 5 years experience as either Captain or 1st Mate on passenger-carrying vessels.
Extensive experience in the operations of vessels in diverse waters such as Southeast Alaska, the Snake and Columbia Rivers, the Gulf of California, Mexico and Hawaii.
Ability to perform voyage planning and navigational calculations.
Excellent crisis management skills: works well under pressure, and acts quickly and decisively using sound judgment.
Supervisory experience in maritime environment required. Additional supervisory oversight of hotel operations strongly preferred.
Proficient user of computer systems, with the ability to utilize MS software applications in a Windows environment.
Able to troubleshoot, act quickly with confidence, and make sound decisions while exercising good judgment
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively present sensitive information in one-on-one situations, and comfort with public speaking in group situations.
Excellent written English language skills, with the ability to prepare professional documents and reports in a timely manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: CREW MANAGEMENT/TRAINING
Directly supervise all employees in the following positions: Chief Engineer, 1st Mate, 2nd Mate, Hotel Manager, and Expedition Leader (reports may vary depending on route/vessel). Indirectly supervise all crew assigned to the vessel.
Respond in a timely manner to all concerns, complaints, and allegations, and conducts investigations as necessary. Notify shore-side managers of potentially escalating problems.
Assist in the training and development of all direct reports. Also assist in the training of any new staff or relief Captain positions.
Monitor and counsel work performance throughout the season and conduct written performance evaluations of the above crew members. Ensure that other managers and officers complete mid-season and end-of-season reviews of assigned staff.
Coach, discipline, and/or terminate crew as necessary in a timely and appropriate manner, seek the guidance and support of shore-side managers in Seattle as needed.
Conduct weekly informational meetings with the staff, officers and crew.
Maintain professional demeanor with guests, crew, staff, agents, officials, and the public.
Through the Officers, oversee the management, operation, maintenance, and repair of the vessel.
Participate in shore-side training as required by the company.
Participate in guest activities such as dining with guests and acts as UnCruise Adventures representative in communities/ports where vessel visits.
Ensure delivery of Company programming directives including Next Adventure, shore excursions, onboard programs, presentations, and off-vessel excursions as defined in company training program.
Distribute all information to and from officers, crew, staff, guests, and the Seattle office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: SAFETY/NAVIGATION/COMPLIANCE/FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Perform bridge navigation during specified periods. Determine geographical position of the ship, using all available means such as GPS, radar ranges, visual observations, depth sounders, etc.
Record necessary entries in navigation and radio logs.
Handle the vessel in docking, anchoring, piloting, en route, in close quarters and open sea conditions.
Ensure vessel compliance to company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and requests supervisory assistance/guidance when necessary.
Navigate vessel to ensure avoidance of marine hazards such as reefs, outlying shoals, shallow waters, etc., using aids to navigation such as lights, lighthouses, and buoys.
Drive inflatable boats as necessary.
Oversee and assists with loading guests, staff, and crew in and out of inflatable boats.
Oversee the security of the vessel both at sea and at dock; ensures gangway watch is posted at all times while at dock.
Coordinate off-ship emergency medical aid. Assist the 1st Mate in administering first aid treatment and in documenting medical incident reports.
Oversee safety briefings for guests and coordinates on-board instructive drills for guests, staff and crew.
Conduct periodic inspections to ensure that crew and guests observe regulations pertaining to safe vessel operation
Prepare the vessel for, and attend all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry-docks and other inspections as required.
Ensure compliance with all regulatory agency directives affecting vessel operations including U.S. Coast Guard, Center for Disease Control, public lands/waters agencies, and others.
Oversee all drug and alcohol testing as required by the U.S. Coast Guard and Company policy.
Ensure compliance with the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.
Oversee all reporting of vessel incidents (hull, crew, staff, and guest).
Oversee all accounting reports, time cards, inventory, and requisitions.
2nd Mate
This position begins at the start of the Summer 2025 Alaska Season.
The 2nd Mate is considered the Navigation Officer. The 2nd Mate is responsible for maintaining the bridge navigational and communications equipment as well as assisting with the vessel's piloting, navigation, safe route planning, maintaining charts and publications, small boat operations, and general caretaking of the bridge and bridge equipment. The 2nd Mate reports to the Captain and will assist the Master in communicating and enforcing all company policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience as Mate operating a passenger vessel, including navigation and bridge watch responsibilities, maintaining navigation/communications equipment, and performing chart corrections.
Excellent crisis management skills: ability to act quickly with confidence while exercising sound judgment.

Small Boat Operations:
Drive inflatable boats as necessary.
Assist with loading guests, staff, and crew in and out of inflatable boats.
Administrative:
Maintain navigation bridge supply inventories and requisitions.
Perform chart and publication corrections and maintain vessel's chart inventory.
Post daily sunrise/sunset times and tide and current information.
Create Voyage Plan waypoint spreadsheet for Captain’s review and approval. Enter voyage itinerary waypoints into GPS.
Maintain hard copies of all external and shipboard training for each employee onboard.
Licensed Deckhand
This position begins January 2025 for shipyard (Seattle, WA) prior to the summer 2025 Alaska Sailing Season.
The Licensed Deckhand is responsible for maintenance and cleaning of the interior/exterior of the vessel, and assisting with small boat operations/driving small boats with guests. In addition, the Deckhand will assist with bridge watch/navigation, perform hourly security patrols including nightly engine room inspections, and assist with general boat operations. In addition to reporting to the 1st Mate, the Bosun also falls under the authority of any Officer of the Watch.
QUALIFICATIONS
Maritime/boating experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Ship Maintenance:
Sweep decks, wash windows, and empty trash receptacles.
Clean general areas such as bulkheads, lockers, etc.
Prime and paint the vessel as assigned.
Assist the 1st Mate and Chief Engineer as directed.
May be assigned various special projects as per the Mate's work list.
Boat Operations:
Handle lines during docking and undocking procedures.
Assigned anchoring duties as needed.
Assist the bridge watch officer with lookout and wheel watch.
Assist the Bosun with lowering/raising and tying up/ casting off of the inflatable boats and kayaks.
Drive inflatable boats on a daily basis and may be called on to provide interpretation on skiff tours.
Assist with loading guests, staff, and crew in and out of inflatable boats.
Safety & Security:
Participate in on board safety training, meetings and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.
Participate in shore side training as required by the company.
Conduct hourly security patrols including inspection of all lower deck, mechanical, and crew spaces.
Serve as needed on gangway watch.
Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.
Chief Engineer
The Chief Engineer position begins in shipyard (Seattle, WA) over the winter months prior to the summer 2025 Alaska Sailing Season. This is a year-round position working 4 weeks on the vessel with 4 weeks off the vessel.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems. On our larger vessels the Chief Engineer manages Assistant Engineer. The Chief Engineer reports to the Master of the vessel and will assist the Master in communicating and enforcing all company policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Maritime Engineering School Graduate in good standing and/or a Designated Duty Engineer License, or equivalent, preferred.
Two years experience as Engineer onboard similar sized passenger vessels preferred.
Strong knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generating systems, fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
Maintain professional demeanor at all times.
Strong time management skills: able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Repair and Maintenance:
Maintain the ship in a state of readiness at all times.
Maintain potable water and auto chlorination system.
Maintain black water/gray water/waste tanks, treatment, and testing program.
Monitor and ensures completion of all deficiencies noted in Cabin Maintenance Notebook.
Oversee all fuel, oil and Potable water bunkering operations and ensures safety and environmental compliance.
Oversee and maintain vessel systems including engineering, deck and hotel department preventative maintenance programs on a daily, weekly and monthly basis with the support of the Assistant Engineer.
Proactively participates in drydocking, shipyard repair and maintenance periods.
Supervisory:
Directly supervises the Assistant Engineer (where applicable).
Monitors and counsels work performance throughout the year and conducts written performance evaluations.
Trains all new and relief Chief Engineers and Assistant Engineers.
Administrative:
Keep vessel maintenance records, inventories, and voyage status reports. Make proposals for maintenance and repair projects.
Assist in building the annual shipyard budget and manage projects to the established budget.
Maintain log sheets for all equipment.
Oversee all accounting reports, inventory and requisitions regarding equipment maintenance.
Safety and Security:
Follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and will request supervisory assistance/guidance when necessary.
Conduct periodic inspections to ensure that crew observes regulations pertaining to safe vessel operation.

Assistant Engineer
This position begins in shipyard (Seattle, WA) over the winter months prior to the summer 2025 Alaska Sailing Season.
The Assistant Engineer is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems onboard. The Assistant Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generation systems. Knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
Computer experience: Microsoft programs Excel, Word, and SharePoint are required.

Perform routine maintenance checks and keeps records of jobs performed. Keeps the Chief Engineer informed of all maintenance and repairs that have been done.
Help with engineering, deck, and hotel preventative maintenance programs on daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Complete maintenance and repair tasks as requested by Chief Engineer or Master.
Perform hotel maintenance tasks as directed by Chief Engineer or Master.
Participate in yearly shipyards.
Assist Chief Engineer in all operations and duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
Administrative:
Update vessel maintenance records for weekly and monthly work items. Assists the Chief Engineer with inventories.
Safety and Security:
Follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures.
Assist in the preparation of the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry docks and other inspections.
Participate in shore side training as required by the company.
Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.
Expedition Guide, Licensed
The Expedition Guide is part of a team whose goal is to inspire guests and help them understand and appreciate the areas they visit during their cruise. The Guide is supervised by the Expedition Leader and Lead Guide and work in teams of 2-7 members, along with the full vessel crew. Primary responsibilities include guiding and interpretation, onboard presentations and narration, and behind the scenes daily maintenance and programmatic tasks. Topics range from geology, glaciology, and marine biology to cultural history and current issues in local destinations. The Guide leads groups of guests on hikes ranging from shore walks to route finding or bushwhacking, skiff tours, snorkeling, and paddle boarding, as well as whole and half day kayak trips. This position takes ownership of delivering an unforgettable vacation experience to guests through sharing their knowledge, guiding excursions, and exemplary customer service, with an emphasis on safety.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum one year of naturalist interpretation or environmental education in the field and formal presentations for groups of up to 90 participants.
Demonstrable written and verbal communications including interpretive materials and presentations development. Demonstrable ability to operate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and photo editing software.
Minimum education of a Bachelor of Science in natural and/or cultural history, or other relevant field of study, or equivalent experience.
Minimum one year professional experience leading small groups in remote field settings and on the water.
Exceptional and demonstrable customer service and problem solving skills.
Strong preference for working in a team setting in remote environments.
Prior small ship cruise industry experience strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Lead hiking and kayaking expeditions in remote wilderness settings with few or no defined trails, utilizing safety standards and route finding skills.
Work within a cohesive and cooperative team led by the Expedition Leader and Lead Guide, with heavy emphasis on communication and teamwork.
Confidently and competently lead groups of up to 20 guests in the field and on the water, and create an enjoyable experience for guests even when an excursion does not go as planned. Heavy emphasis on customer service, dynamic thinking and safety.
Demonstrable ability to utilize a GPS, and read navigational and topographical maps and software.
Provide in the field, hands-on interpretation, and thematic, formal onboard presentations that are integrated into a week-long interpretive program, and wildlife narration utilizing interactive tools such as maps, charts, guidebooks, power point, microscopes and spotting scopes to involve the guests.
Develop and deliver educational presentations covering environmental science, history, or other relevant topics to the itinerary as assigned by the EL for up to 90 guests.
Cultivate the guest experience by focusing on the observation of the surrounding geology, flora and fauna by encouraging passengers to spend as much time on deck exploring and experiencing the natural surroundings that may go unnoticed.
Participate in the behind the scenes daily maintenance and programmatic tasks that keep our gear and program running. These tasks will include, but are not limited to, photo editing, blogging, slideshow creation, gear stowage, repair, cleaning, and organization.
Proactively maintain the cleanliness, order and function of all Expedition tools, including kayaks, paddleboards, electronics and snorkeling gear.
Assist in general shipboard tasks during the operating season including loading of ship’s food stores, laundry, garbage, luggage, and helping the hotel staff with cleaning as needed.
Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance amongst crew and guests at all times, while living in a close community setting.
Hotel Manager
The Hotel Manager (HM) is a key member of the Vessel Leadership Team (VLT - a group of leaders assigned to manage all aspects of each department on the vessel). This is a hands-on position, and the employee is responsible for the overall operations of the Hotel Department including front of house, back of house, bar, and housekeeping services, as well as the overall guest experience. This position reports to the Captain while sailing in addition to the Senior Hotel Manager on shore.
QUALIFICATIONS
Three to five years of experience managing a team of eight to ten individuals in a hospitality setting. We are looking for proven leaders who can act as mentors and motivate their team.
Understanding of bar and galley operations with a robust foundation of knowledge regarding food, wine, and spirits
Strong time management skills; ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet tight deadlines. The position requires a balance between administrative responsibilities and a hands-on presence throughout dining services and cleaning tasks while also adjusting for weather and wildlife
Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and articulate information in a respectful, professional, and composed manner to crew and guests
Experience with POS system and proficiency in Microsoft programs highly preferred
Comfortable living in close quarters with other crewmembers (at least one roommate), including those you manage.
Passenger vessel experience is highly desired, but not required.
A passion for customer service, keen sense of adventure, business intelligence, strong communication, and leadership/interpersonal skills are essential.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Actively responsible for overall interior operations of the vessel and upholding company standards in dining, beverage, housekeeping, and customer service areas. Responsibilities include strong coordination and communication with fellow VLT to curate an excellent adventure for guests.
Oversee and work with the Lead Steward in training, developing, and supervising a team of 2-8 stewards in all job competencies to exceed guest expectations. This task includes daily and weekly housekeeping and sanitation inspections, wine tastings and bar training, and table touching for guest feedback.
Collaborate with the Head Chef to ensure entire galley team is providing quality and safety in timely onboard food service, compliance with corporate menu and company standards and FDA requirements.
Act as the vessel’s purser by reconciling guest accounts, completing and submitting all FOH and BOH inventories and orders, accurately tracking petty cash, payroll, and shore-side purchases and presenting the Next Adventure Program weekly.
Human resource responsibilities include onboarding new crew members, monitoring, coaching, and counseling work performance throughout the season via documented performance reviews, corrective action documents and separations.
Act as an integral member of the onboard safety team as the crew muster leader. Participate in onboard safety training, meetings and drills as directed by the Captain and per the company’s Safety Management System (SMS)
Steward
The Steward is a multi-talented and hard-working position. Main job responsibilities include serving meals, cleaning guest cabins and interior public spaces, assisting with bartending/cocktail service, and occasional galley duties. This is an extremely guest service focused position and requires a pleasant and accommodating demeanor at all times. The steward role is physically demanding and mentally challenging. The right candidate for this role will be able to constantly adapt to new situations while maintaining a positive attitude and professional demeanor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum two years of experience in a full-service restaurant with strong wine knowledge and food terminology required
One to two years of experience in housekeeping role preferred
Ability to work in a team environment with strong interpersonal and communication skills
Must be flexible and adaptable as daily activities change regularly and often
Comfortable living and working in close quarters with other crew members
Passenger vessel experience is welcome but not required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Dining Room Service – We strive for fine dining in a casual atmosphere:
Provide exceptional guest service by describing menu options, answering guest questions, making suggestions, and confidently offering wine pairings
Accurately take guest orders making sure to note allergies, dietary needs, and special requests
Set tables, fold napkins, follow steps of service, bus, and breakdown dining room for three meals per day
Assist in galley as directed including dish pit duties and cleaning projects
Housekeeping:
Thoroughly clean six to ten guest cabins daily as outlined by company standards and expectations
Maintain cleanliness of all interior public spaces through daily phase work and special projects
Safety, Security & Training:
Participate in on board safety training, meetings, and drills as directed by the Captain. These include fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding, medical emergencies, and bear safety
Chef
The Chef is responsible for overseeing all staff and functions within the galley. The Chef will coordinate and participate in all galley activities regarding food preparation, inventory, ordering, and cleaning under the direction of the Hotel Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 2 years experience managing a kitchen or galley staff.
Minimum of 4 years restaurant/banquet cooking in positions of increasing responsibility including line cooking and prep work.
Good time management skills: ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to get along with co-workers and support a team environment.
Extensive knowledge with all special diets and allergies.
Able to execute a wide variety of different cuisines and cooking styles.
Experience with passenger vessels is preferred, but not required.
Should be very flexible, understanding that due to the nature of wildlife and adventure cruising, schedules change on the fly. Adapting quickly to circumstances is essential.
Comfortable living and working in close quarters with other crewmembers, including those you are supervising.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively present sensitive information in one-on-one situations as well as comfort with public speaking in group situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Plan, oversee, and execute all guest and crew meals with the assistance of the Sous chef(s) and Pastry Chef. Follow company guidelines for ordering, inventory, and budget management. Maintain quality and consistency with the menu items daily.
Participate in the cooking and preparation of food items as a member of the galley staff.
Prepare special diet/allergy items for guests and crew as needed, such as vegan, gluten free, nut allergy, etc.
Ensure the provisioning of all food and related products by placing weekly orders in conjunction with the Hotel Manager, including loading and checking-in provisions.
Actively involved in storing provisions with the weekly order.
Maintain accurate inventories for appropriate stocking levels and proper rotation of perishable food stores. This includes the cleaning and organization of all provision storage areas in galley, freezer, refrigerator, and storeroom.
Responsible for limiting food waste and will document as needed.
Work closely with the Hotel Manager to create a comfortable and safe work environment for all galley employees.
Maintain professional demeanor with guests, crew, staff, agents, officials, and the public.
Sous Chef
The Sous Chef is responsible for assisting the entire galley team in all food preparation and galley sanitation efforts; this includes prep, production, plate up, and clean-up of six meals per day (3 guest meals, 3 crew meals). This multi-tasking position will also be responsible for the preparation of crew meals and must be capable of executing a variety of cooking skills and different cuisines on a daily basis. The Sous Chef will also assist with washing dishes on a rare occasion, loading and storing food provisions, participating in galley cleaning, and other sanitation duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 2-3 years experience cooking in a general kitchen or galley setting.
Excellent knife skills and the ability to follow any recipe from start to finish.
Possess extensive knowledge in various cuisines with the ability to create meals without a recipe.
Good time management skills: ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Must be hardworking, flexible and willing to communicate professionally with the Chef and other crew members.
Able to get along with co-workers and support a team environment.
Experience with passenger vessels is preferred, but not required.
Comfortable living and working in close quarters with other crew members for many weeks at a time, with no days off. This may include crew from the galley. Having your own room is not an option due to limited berthing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Participate in the production and presentation of all guest meals.
Create and prepare a variety of nutritious, fresh, and creative crew meals, on time as scheduled.
Execute standard recipes as directed by the Chef.
Prepare entrees and crew meals for special diets such as gluten free, dairy free, and vegan, as directed by the Chef, with or without a recipe.
Daily prep and cleaning responsibilities are subject to change under Chefs discretion.
Assist in galley clean up after every meal including dish area support and disposal of trash.
Assist in maintaining proper food handling and storage procedures in accordance with CDC/FDA guidelines.
Guest Interaction: Interact with guests in a friendly and courteous manner at all times. Participate in evening activities and in galley tour as directed by Chef or Hotel Manager.
Pastry Chef
The Pastry Chef is responsible for all baking, preparation, and presentation of breads, pastries, and desserts along with plate-up of meals, assisting Galley Utility if needed, and galley cleaning as assigned. The Pastry Chef will also (rarely but when required) assist the galley team with preparing crew meals and preparing savory items. When working a night baker position will need to wash all their own dishes, pots, and pans.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 4 years experience in a general kitchen or galley setting.
Minimum of 2 years working with Pastries and Desserts.
Proficient in creating breads, desserts, and pastries for guests with special diets and allergies, such as gluten free, dairy free, nut allergies, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Plan and oversee the production and presentation of all breads, pastries, cookies and desserts.
Prepare items for special diets for guests and crew as needed for vegan, gluten free, nut allergies, etc.
The Pastry Chef (on rare occasions) may be asked to help prep or cook meals in addition to their baking responsibility for the day.
Assist the Chef(s) with plate-up and clean-up of breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily; this includes supporting the dish station.
Assist with weekly storing of provisions even if working as an overnight baker.
Maintain accurate inventories to ensure appropriate stocking levels and proper rotation of perishable food stores; this includes the cleaning and organization of all storage areas in galley, freezer, refrigerator, and storeroom. Work closely with the Chef to help create weekly orders based on inventory.
Assist with maintaining proper sanitation in the galley under the Chefs discretion.
Guest Interaction: always Interact with guests in a friendly and courteous manner. Escort guests to stateroom at start of cruise and assist in the handling of luggage. Participate in evening activities and in galley tour as directed by Chef or Hotel Manager.
Galley Utility
The Galley Utility is a very physically demanding position primarily responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the dish station in the galley. In this position you will be washing all pots, pans, silverware, service items, and glassware for each meal served on board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The Galley Utility will be required to keep their workstation clean and sanitized. The Galley Utility will also assist with general galley cleaning projects and basic food prep as assigned by the Chef or Hotel Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 1 year experience in a general kitchen or galley setting or possess a great, hard-working attitude and some experience with customer service.

Dishwashing: Properly wash, rinse, and sanitize each type of plate, silverware, pot, pan, utensil, and glassware using a commercial dishwashing machine.
Galley sanitation: Assist with cleaning the galley throughout the day. Assist in maintaining proper food handling and storage procedures in accordance with CDC/FDA guidelines. Assist with trash removal and disposal.
Actively involved with helping store the weekly provisions.

May be asked to participate in the cooking, preparation, or plate-up of food items as a member of the galley team.
