TOUR OPERATIONS

Activities Guides are professional guides committed and focused on providing unparalleled customer service and have the skill and demeanor to facilitate a safe and fun experience for cruise ship guests. Guides will be rotated through different tours throughout the cruise ship season, so every week will be a new adventure! Guides will be cross trained in leading electric mountain bike tours, lake kayaking, sea cycling and hiking tours.  

$16.00/hr

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct safe and informative, high-level tours, which meet and exceed guest expectations

  • Meet and greet guests with a professional attitude and appearance

  • Service & maintain all equipment in the best possible condition, report damage and issues to supervisor

  • Share knowledge and relevant information in a fun and entertaining manner in front of groups as large as twenty people

  • Prepare all equipment and supplies for each day’s needs

  • Participate in all required training and educational clinics

  • Attend all safety training, meetings, and clinics

  • Maintain current knowledge of all safety procedures

  • Work collaboratively with fellow guides and all management

  • Outfit guests in weather appropriate gear and safety equipment

  • Provide instructions to guests of varying skill levels on the safe use of equipment

  • Update FareHarbor booking reservation system as needed

  • Answer and address any guest concerns or questions

  • Cleans and organizes all equipment and workspaces, and maintains inspection log

  • Able to work outdoors for long days in diverse weather conditions

  • Always demonstrate outstanding guest service and professionalism

  • Be ready to perform basic First Aid and CPR if needed

  • Work a flexible schedule

  • Build a comprehensive knowledge base about the flora and fauna of southeast Alaska, the history of the Ketchikan Pulp Mill, the Tongass National Forest and surrounding areas

Job Qualifications: 

  • Safety Focus: Must be able to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for guests, employees, and the public

  • Customer-Service Focus: Must understand that customer service is a top priority and must conduct all actions with this in mind

  • Attention to Detail: Maintaining high company standards in the upkeep of gear and equipment, presentation of the tour product and customer focus

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Must be flexible and able to produce appropriate solutions quickly, working across the organization at times. Must be able to find creative solutions to unique problems and employ a logical and organized thought process

  • 1 to 2 years of previous guiding experience in an outdoor environment, preferred but not required

  • First aid & CPR certified; lifeguarding, water rescue, kayak instruction helpful, but we will also provide training

  • Presentation skills: Must be able to deliver a scripted/non-scripted, entertaining, informative, safety briefing and tour presentation on a 2–3-hour tour multiple times a day to guests with varying backgrounds and skillsets

 

Maintenance Staff


 

The maintenance staff will help maintain overall cleanliness and maintenance of the port.  Your duties will include maintenance and upkeep of all projects necessary to keep the entire site operation looking its very best.

$18.00/hr

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Always keep safety foremost in your mind and actions when on the job;

  • Ground’s landscaping and maintenance as required;

  • Properly and confidently operate shop equipment;

  • Basic carpentry, plumbing and painting on construction and building projects as directed;

  • Operation of forklift;

  • Communicate comfortably with guests and colleagues;

  • Deliver a first-class experience to all guests and visitors;

  • Ongoing cleaning of all bathroom facilities;

  • Building and maintaining fires;

  • Cleaning and maintenance of museum;

  • Upkeep of employee housing;

  • Restocking of supplies as needed;

  • Trash collection;

  • Wash down of docks and facility grounds as needed;

  • Removal of cobwebs on exterior and interior of buildings and fences;

  • Start up and shut down of all facilities on site;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CDL Driver


 

Drive a shuttle bus from Ward Cove’s historical Pulp Mill while having a set schedule with work-life balance where you can still enjoy Alaska! The CDL Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of guests between Ward Cove and downtown Ketchikan through the Tongass National Forest. Whether you like storytelling, touring, or just chatting with our guests – here you are more than just a driver! This position includes a retention bonus of $5 per hour, paid at the end of the contract, for a total wage of $30 per hour.

$25.00/hr + tips

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize the safety of your vehicle and guests by driving carefully through a highway and town;

  • Ensure safe and efficient boarding / disembarkation of guests with the Guest Service Representatives;

  • Applies knowledge of the local area to provide information to passengers;

  • Drive in accordance with federal and state (Alaska) DOT regulations and employer shuttle training;

  • Apply knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations through required documents maintained daily;

  • Performs inspections on shuttles and maintain shuttle cleanliness throughout the day;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Ability to safely drive a shuttle bus while speaking to passengers, answering questions, and providing narration, while working in a team or group environment;

  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and written, with customers, employees, and management;

  • Knowledgeable in the importance of DVIRs and pre/post-trips;

  • Preparedness in safety incidents that may require your assistance;

  • Knowledge of the critical aspects of your vehicle and upkeep its condition;

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines;

  • Ability to successfully complete company shuttle training program.

Education and Experience:

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class B without air brake restrictions and passenger endorsements required.

  • Clean driving record with no infractions in the last three years.

  • At least one-year related experience required.

 

Guest Service Representatives


 

Guest Service Representatives will be cross trained on a variety of responsibilities to assist every department at The Mill at Ward Cove.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting guests boarding shuttle buses, outfit guests for tours, docent at the museum, lead gold panning demonstrations, run a cash register, sell tours, and provide information to guests about The Mill at Ward Cove and downtown Ketchikan. 

$16.00/hr

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Meet and greet guests with a professional attitude and appearance and provide exceptional customer service;

  • Communicate effectively amongst your team and all departments;

  • Knowledge and promotion of all Ward Cove venues and retail, Answer and address any guest concerns or questions;

  • Work as greeters to welcome guests and conduct guest orientations;

  • Work closely with drivers and local operators to ensure effective shuttle operations by monitoring guest boarding and disembarkation;

  • Safely monitor locations with high-vehicle traffic. Assist with backing buses and watching for blind spots;

  • Provide guests with information about all tours, shuttles, and events available;

  • Efficiently use a computerized reservation system to book tours;

  • Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash at POS registers;

  • Maintain an awareness of the all-product knowledge information, merchandise promotions, test merchandise and advertisements

  • Assist in processing and replenishing merchandise; 

  • Cleans and organizes all equipment and workspaces;

  • Ability to react and respond to safety incidents with preparedness;

  • Work a flexible schedule

Mechanic


 

The Mechanic will inspect, service, and maintain a diesel and gas-powered vehicle fleet. As a lead mechanic, this position is responsible for inspecting engines and equipment, carrying out services, conducting repairs, and providing routine maintenance on the fleet to keep them operating safely. Knowledge of small engine and outboard motor maintenance a plus.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance on all company vehicles

  • Document and maintain accurate records of maintenance, work orders, driver inspection reports, parts orders and DOT inspections

  • Supply and maintain shop facilities, equipment, and software

  • Purchase inventory and track parts

  • Research repair solutions using industry software solutions and working with industry experts

  • Repair and overhaul engines, transmissions, motors, and equipment components as required 

  • Maintain Federal, State, and local safety standards

  • Maintain positive communication with other employees as well as service vendors, and partners

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Must be able to maintain a safe working environment and follow safety procedures

  • Knowledge of DOT regulations as related to vehicle inspections and repairs

  • Recognize and report defects or malfunctions, upon inspection

  • Read and understand vehicle maintenance and repair codes and instructions on the computer

Port Security Staff


 

Port Security Staff lead the charge in safety and security for the facilities and guests at The Mill at Ward Cove port facility working in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and Ward Cove Dock Group’s Facility Security Plan (FSP) to provide quality service to our guests and locals.

$18.00/hr

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for patrolling restricted and non-restricted areas on the Ward Cove dock, facilities, and property, reporting any breach of security to appropriate personnel;

  • Ensures embarking is controlled. Responsible for vehicle and traffic control accessing the dock;

  • Understands and implements various Maritime Security (MARSEC) Level changes and implements required port enforcement action;

  • Work with USCG, local authorities, and cruise lines in maintaining safety and guest satisfaction;

  • Provides vehicle and pedestrian traffic control duties to ensure safe passage for port related pedestrian and vehicular traffic; 

  • Ensures vehicles entering the property and dock have the proper identification/pass;

  • When required, places or moves pedestrian control devices and barricades;

  • Lead and participate in real-world safety drills & exercises;

  • Use of hand-held radios and cell phones for succinct distribution of information;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Retail Sales Associate


 

Retail Sales Associates serve as a customer service representative for guests at The Mill at Ward Cove; assist guests with purchases; prepare and stock merchandise for sale; perform inventory control duties; organize and distribute merchandise. Perform other duties related to the successful operation of the retail store including cleaning and moderate lifting.

$16.00/hr

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

  • Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash and media accountabilities at POS registers;

  • Maintain an awareness of the all-product knowledge information, merchandise promotions, test merchandise and advertisements;

  • Always demonstrate outstanding guest service and professionalism;

  • Assist in floor moves, merchandising, display maintenance and store housekeeping;

  • Assist in processing and replenishing merchandise; participate in receiving and monitoring floor stock; ensures re-wraps are done promptly;

  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and practices including signing, pricing, and loss prevention;

  • Knowledge and promotion of all Ward Cove venues and retail;

  • Prepare, clean and organize all equipment and supplies for each day’s needs; 

  • Participate in all required training and educational clinics;

Line Cook


 

The Line Cook will prepare meal ingredients, simple dishes, condiments, and other items as directed by Head Cook for the M/V Malaspina guests.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepares meal ingredients as directed by the head cook.

  • Prepares fresh produce by peeling, cutting, and portioning.

  • Prepares meat by trimming, cutting, and portioning.

  • Prepares simple dishes such as breads or salads.

  • Mixes or prepares condiments, dressings, and sauces.

  • Assists with unloading, inspection, and storage of raw ingredients and supplies.

  • Maintains compliance with applicable health, safety, food handling, and hygiene codes and standards;

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Janitorial Staff


 

The Janitorial Staff performs general cleaning and sanitizing tasks and services throughout the Welcome Center, M/V Malaspina and grounds.

DOE

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus of $1 per hour/$1.50 per overtime hour, paid at the end of the contract.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Cleans, disinfects and replenish supplies in restroom, kitchen and common areas;

  • Vacuums, sweeps and cleans floors, rugs, furniture, and drapes;

  • Remove waste and empty trash and cigarette receptacles;

  • Wipes and dusts surfaces and cleans mirrors and windows;

  • Loads washers and dryers and folds sheets and towels in laundry room;

  • Stocks linens, towels, washcloths, and hand towels;  

  • Maintain cleaning chart indicating areas that were cleaned and inspected;

  • Replenish cleaning and maintenance supplies;

  • Organize janitorial storage areas;

  • Make sure all doors, windows, entrances and exits are securely closed and locked in evening;

  • Notifies Housing Manager if something is not working properly;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Ketchikan sits at the southernmost entrance to Alaska’s famed Inside Passage and in the midst of the Tongass National Forest, a 17M-acre temperate rainforest full of cedar, Sitka spruce, waterfalls, and wildlife. The Mill at Ward Cove is the site of the historic Ketchikan Pulp Mill, the longest operating pulp mill in Alaska, located just 7 miles north of downtown Ketchikan.  

About The Mill at Ward Cove

Completed in 1954 and operated until 1997, The Mill was the economic heartbeat of Southeast Alaska. Logs were harvested from the forest and transformed into usable products such as rayon, cellophane, explosives, pharmaceuticals, and even food additives.  As we develop this destination The Mill at Ward Cove will again become an economic driver for the community of Ketchikan, creating year-round jobs for local residents as well as fun seasonal opportunities for non-residents.

As Alaska’s newest cruise ship port, the Mill at Ward Cove will become a major destination in Alaska.  For the 2022 season, we will provide our guests with a true Alaska experience at our Welcome Center with great retail opportunities including artisan kiosks, a full sit-down dining experience, and museum displays that showcase the history of The Mill.

We will be operating a variety of adventurous tour options such as kayaking, hiking, sea cycle adventure, self-drive zodiac tour, and an e-bike tour.   We will also engage our guests with storytelling, live music, and other artistic attractions. 

Sign-On Bonus:

If signed-on prior to February 1, 2023, employee will receive $500 paid at the end of their contract and Travel Reimbursement: Up to $300 travel reimbursement with receipts paid at the end of the probationary period (3 weeks)
