Alpine Backpacking Instructor
Job Description
In this role, you will instruct backpacking and/or rock climbing courses with youth in the High Sierra. Our programs range from 4-65 days in a variety of locations such as the Sierra National Forest, Yosemite National Park, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. These programs and expeditions focus on leadership, service, and character development, and take students into new and challenging outdoor environments.
Schedule: Training begins May 5th, 2023 at our High Sierra program base in Midpines, California (30 miles east of Yosemite National Park). Work availability through mid to late August, with the potential to extend into September. We also run programs in Joshua Tree from October - April.
Salary & Benefits: $124/day. Room and board provided while on contract. Employees also have access to Pro Deals (the opportunity to purchase outdoor gear at discounted rates), professional development funds, access to Employee Assistance Program (EAP), free of charge for staff and family members, and 56 hours (7 days) of paid sick time upon hire or at the beginning of each calendar year.
Qualifications
A qualified applicant will have a mix of interpersonal, technical, risk management, and educational skills. Please visit our job description to best understand the different qualifications. We do not expect every applicant to have every skill and qualification that we are looking for. Below is a guideline for a competitive candidate:
Backcountry experience: 50-100 nights, which can be a combination of personal and professional, comfortable navigating with map and compass on- and off-trail, familiarity with basic campcraft, comfort with self-care and energy management while in the backcountry for extended periods of time, rock climbing experience is a plus
Facilitation/Educator experience: Passionate about working with youth, especially teens and middle schoolers, and can uphold Outward Bound’s zero-tolerance policy for incidents of child abuse and neglect, have a deep understanding and personal commitment to equity and inclusion in the outdoors, lived experience or experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds including age, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic class and members of the LGBTQ+ community
Physical & Mental Requirements: Sufficiently fit to participate in all site and course activities while maintaining ample energy, strength, and focus to aid students and instructors, able to maintain composure, exercise sound judgment, and assess and mitigate risk under periods of stress, able to carry pack weights of up to 60-70 pounds
Required Certifications: Wilderness First Responder & CPR/AED, CA Epinephrine Auto-Injector, California Food Handler
Onboarding Requirements: 21 years of age or older, able to pass a federal & Live Scan background check and provide current (within the last 4 years) negative TB screen or test results (cost of all paid for or reimbursed by OBCA), up-to-date COVID-19 vaccines as defined by the CDC
