Montana Conservation Corps believes that through conservation service work and authentic connection, you can sharpen your ability to create change and join the next generation of leaders for a better world. At MCC, we focus on the growth of our participants, positively impacting our climate and environment, and transferable job skills.  MCC offers crew-based programming that uses natural resource and community service projects to foster personal and crew development.  We work in some of the most scenic landscapes in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Plains, including Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and South Dakota.

Field Crew Leader

Montana Conservation Corps believes that through conservation service work and authentic connection, you can sharpen your ability to create change and join the next generation of leaders for a better world. At MCC, we focus on the growth of our participants, positively impacting our climate and environment, and transferable job skills. 

What you will do:

As a crew leader, you will work to oversee 3-4 adult crew members on 4-9 day overnight conservation projects on some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Northern Rockies and Plains. Some crew leaders will lead a crew solo, some will lead with a co-leader, and some will have an assistant crew leader. The crew you will oversee will be made up of adults who are 17-30 years old and come from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the country. Crew Leaders will be responsible for helping to facilitate crew member growth, manage conflict on their crew, and support the crew in completing quality project work in the field.   

Crews will camp for the full duration of a hitch (i.e. 4-9 day project assignment), oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, including car-camping and remote backcountry settings away from a vehicle. Project work is physically demanding, and could include trail maintenance and construction, habitat restoration, mesic restoration, planting, backcountry work, forest fuels reduction, and more. As a Crew Leader, you will participate in a 3 month dynamic and immersive leadership development program crafted over two decades to enhance your confidence, resilience, and technical capabilities.  You will engage in activities that will help you explore communication styles, develop emotional intelligence, master conflict resolution, and learn facilitation techniques to teach to different learning styles, and apply your knowledge to new scenarios. Through feedback, reflection, and discussion, you will leave with actionable strategies to become an effective leader.

You will also receive extensive technical training to cover a range of essential skills for outdoor professionals, including federally recognized certifications in chainsaw and crosscut use, defensive driving, and Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA). You will gain expertise in backcountry travel, trail maintenance, Leave No Trace principles, habitat management, and natural resource management. This comprehensive training equips crew leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for diverse situations and challenges. 

After a term of service with MCC as a Crew Leader, you will be mentally and physically stronger, more resilient, and have the ability to lead others with confidence. This isn’t just a chance to work in the field and have a positive impact on the environment. Women’s Field Crew Leader

The Women’s Field Crew focuses on creating an experience where women can come together and work as a crew to tackle trail work projects, live in remote woodland settings, and focus on personal and professional growth within their team.  This crew is for anyone who identifies as a woman and/or femme. We welcome trans applicants who are comfortable in a femme-identifying space.  As part of the Women's Field Crew, you will be with other female identifying individuals with a focus on getting work done for America’s public lands.

Fuels and Fire Crew Leader

What you will do:

As a crew leader, you will work to oversee 4-5 adult crew members on 9 day overnight conservation projects on some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Northern Rockies and Plains. Some crew leaders will lead a crew solo, some will lead with a co-leader, and some will have an assistant crew leader. The crew you will oversee will be made up of adults who are 17-30 years old and come from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the country. Crew Leaders will be responsible for helping to facilitate crew member growth, manage conflict on their crew, and support the crew in completing quality project work in the field.   

Crews will camp for the full duration of a hitch (i.e. 4-9 day project assignment), oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, including car-camping and remote backcountry settings away from a vehicle. This crew will work throughout the forest service and other agencies. Work will primarily consist of wildland fuels mitigation projects, a high proportion of chainsaw use, fireline construction and other forest health monitoring activities. Not all CLs will work on all types of projects. Crews may be deployed for natural disaster relief.  Learn more about the variety of project work here!  

Participants will have the opportunity to receive extensive training and potential certifications in wildland firefighting, including a nationally recognized chainsaw certification (S212), basic wildland firefighting classes (S130, S190, L180, IS100, IS700), in addition to having an opportunity to receive a wildland fire incident qualification “red” card. Should conditions allow, there may be an opportunity to participate in prescribed burning or active wildland firefighting. during your term of service. This is NOT guaranteed.

Wildland Restoration Team Leader

Wildland Restoration Teams work with a diverse range of stakeholders (private, government, and non-profit) in order to achieve large scale land conservation efforts with rural communities throughout the state of Montana. This is a great opportunity for current students, recent college graduates, or anyone who has an interest in restoration to gain practical field experience in a rapidly growing area of conservation, with and a strong potential for future career paths.  Wildland Restoration Teams mitigate invasive plants through mechanical, chemical, and biological efforts. Crew use herbicide to manage invasive weeds, and MCC provides professional level training in the safe use and transport of chemicals. Wildland Restoration Teams manage invasive weeds in the remote Selway Bitterroot Wilderness, the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, The Payette National Forest, Glacier National Park, and on the breathtaking plains of eastern Montana. Crew Leaders also earn Herbicide Applicator Licenses, a certification through the State of Montana that is vital to future careers in invasive management. Wildland Restoration Teams may also work on a variety of other projects, including stream restoration, beaver-dam mimicry, non-native fish removal, fencing, planting, trail building and more. Forestry Crew Leader

Forestry crews offer opportunities to gain considerable field experience in a variety of Forest Service timber management activities. This position is based in Kalispell, MT with project work located on the Kootenai and Flathead National Forests OR based in Missoula, MT with work primarily on the Payette and Boise National Forests OR Bozeman, MT in a variety of locations.

Mesic - Wildland Restoration Team Leader

Crew Leaders will be responsible for helping to facilitate crew member growth, manage conflict on their crew, and support the crew in completing quality project work in the field.

These Wildland Restoration Teams will participate in a variety of innovative wetlands and habitat restoration projects, with a main focus on mesic restoration techniques including beaver mimicry and in-stream beaver-dam analog construction, a simple, effective, and non-invasive approach to riparian restoration.  Crews will construct beaver mimicry structures (Low Tech Process Based Restoration) to effectively slow down and spread water over the landscape to expand critical habitat, mitigate wildfire, reduce invasive species and increase water availability in traditionally parched times of year.  Studies have shown that these stream remediation efforts in the treated watershed mitigated the effects of drought, reduced the risk of catastrophic wildfire and flooding, improved water quality, expanded critical habitat and created a micro-climate with reduced air and water temperatures. Projects are often rigorous, requiring participants to carry and use heavy power equipment and work in hot weather across rugged terrain while wearing protective gear. Not all CLs will work on all types of projects. Crews may be deployed for natural disaster relief. This position is based in Helena, MT with extensive travel to the central and eastern part of the state required. Learn more about the project work here!

This comprehensive training equips crew leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for diverse situations and challenges.

Women’s Fuels and Fire Leader


 

Gain professional job skills, become an effective leader, and launch your wildland fire career! 

Montana Conservation Corps believes that through conservation service work and authentic connection, you can sharpen your ability to create change and join the next generation of leaders for a better world. At MCC, we focus on the growth of our participants, positively impacting our climate and environment, and transferable job skills. 

What you will do:

As a crew leader, you will work to oversee 3-4 adult crew members on 4-9 day overnight conservation projects on some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Northern Rockies and Plains. Some crew leaders will lead a crew solo, some will lead with a co-leader, and some will have an assistant crew leader. The crew you will oversee will be made up of adults who are 17-30 years old and come from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the country. Crew Leaders will be responsible for helping to facilitate crew member growth, manage conflict on their crew, and support the crew in completing quality project work in the field.   

Crews will camp for the full duration of a hitch (i.e. 4-9 day project assignment), oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, including car-camping and remote backcountry settings away from a vehicle.

The Women’s Fuels and Fire Crew offers an intentional and  supportive work environment  for anyone who identifies as a woman and/or femme. We welcome trans applicants who are comfortable in a femme-identifying space.  MCC’s Women’s Fuels and Fire Crews work in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) with one crew working primarily in Yellowstone National Park and the other in Grand Teton National Park. This program focuses heavily on education and exposure, providing participants with the opportunity to shadow and work alongside our agency partners to gain skills and knowledge in natural resource management, specifically related to the field of wildland firefighting. Participants will have the opportunity to receive extensive training and potential certifications in wildland firefighting, including a nationally recognized chainsaw certification (S212), basic wildland firefighting classes (S130, S190, L180, IS100, IS700), in addition to having an opportunity to receive a  wildland fire incident qualification “red” card.  Additionally, our partners will work to mentor participants, helping to support their growth and build a resume to apply for federal wildland fire jobs. Project work will vary, but will include habitat restoration and fuels reduction with a partial focus on chainsaw use, and a general emphasis on gaining knowledge of the professional pathways that exist within our Federal Land Management Agencies.

Should conditions allow, upon completion of your term of service with MCC it is the goal of the National Park Service to provide you with the opportunity to deploy on a fire assignment. Fire rolls depend on need and can start 2-20 days after your term of service ends in mid-August. Rolls vary in length depending on need from 14-30 days. If the need arises after your MCC season concludes, crews will communicate directly with NPS partners to join a fire role or any other alternative assignment as AD (administratively determined) hires.  You will NOT be on an active fire/prescribed burn during your term with Montana Conservation Corps.

There will be 2 different crews for the 2024 season; the programs are all similar, but project work and season can vary between crews:

Participants must pass medical screening and must meet the Federal Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty wildland firefighting. Pack Testing will take place at the beginning of the season during Guard School!

Senior Crew Leader


 

Montana Conservation Corps believes that through conservation service work and authentic connection, you can sharpen your ability to create change and join the next generation of leaders for a better world. What you will do:

Senior Crew Leaders are an integral part of our regional office teams. As a Senior Crew Leader, you will assist with the training of our Field Leaders, spend ample time with crews in the field to help ensure the successful completion of MCC projects and programming, and provide logistical support to ensure regional operations run smoothly including equipment management and administrative tasks. The needs of this position will vary based on the time of year and the region where the SCL is serving. 

During the months of February through May, you will  play a key role in the development and delivery of the Leadership Development Program (LDP) and will be frequently asked to take on the role of instructor, teacher, and mentor during the three month training period preceding the field season. This could include teaching field skills, assisting with technical training, and modeling the tenets of our leadership model. During the months of June - October, you can expect to spend the majority of your time in the field supporting project work, crew leaders and members, and maintaining positive relationships with our project partners. This is a great opportunity for anyone with former leadership experience who is looking to enhance their leadership capacity, gain a greater understanding of how a field program is managed, and invested in taking on the role of a mentor and teacher. 

MCC Crews will camp for the full duration of a hitch (i.e. 4-9 day project assignment), oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, including car-camping and remote backcountry settings away from a vehicle. Since this position supports all types of crews in the field, work may include building or maintaining trails, treating or removing invasive species, low tech process based restoration (beaver dams), building fences, operating chainsaws to reduce wildfire risks by thinning trees, clearing trees with crosscuts and axes in the backcountry, and many other types of projects. Not all SCLs will work on all types of projects.
