Fly Fishing Instructor


 

Camp Laurel South is seeking a passionate and skilled Fly Fishing Instructor to join our team for the upcoming summer season. As a Fly Fishing Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching campers of various ages and skill levels the art of fly fishing in our beautiful natural setting. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who love the outdoors, have a deep appreciation for conservation, and enjoy working with children.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach campers the fundamentals of fly fishing, including casting techniques, knot tying, fly selection, and fish handling.

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate fly fishing curriculum and lesson plans.

  • Lead instructional sessions both on land and in water, ensuring camper safety at all times.

  • Organize and supervise fishing excursions to nearby rivers, streams, and lakes.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages campers to develop confidence and skills in fly fishing.

  • Provide individualized instruction and feedback to campers to support their growth and improvement.

  • Demonstrate and promote ethical angling practices and respect for the environment.

  • Collaborate with other camp staff to integrate fly fishing activities into the overall camp program.

  • Maintain and organize fly fishing equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in good working condition.

  • Uphold camp policies and procedures, including safety protocols and risk management guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience teaching or guiding fly fishing activities preferred.

  • Proficiency in fly fishing techniques, equipment, and terminology.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with children and staff members.

  • Enthusiasm for outdoor education and a commitment to fostering a love of nature in campers.

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

  • Ability to pass background checks and adhere to camp policies and guidelines.

  • Flexibility, patience, and a positive attitude.

Camp Laurel South is located near Portland, Maine in the heart of the Sebago Lakes Region. Its 150 unspoiled acres include woodlands, sports fields, and open lawns. The camp’s 2500 feet of private shoreline along sparkling Crescent Lake features a magnificent natural sandy beach and access to more than 3 miles of exceptionally clear waters. The area is famous for warm, sunny days and comfortable nights and boasts 50 lakes within a 25-mile radius. Its location in southern Maine makes Laurel South a most inviting summer retreat for campers and counselors alike.

Each year, we choose the Laurel South team from students, graduates, and faculty from schools and colleges mostly from throughout the U.S. with a few from abroad. We look for people with personality, character, maturity, professional training, experience and most importantly, a sincere desire to work with children. Our counselor to camper ratio is better than 1:3.

As a staff member, you enjoy several nights and days off during the summer. Our salaries are competitive and vary according to age, education, skill, and experience. Room/board and laundry services are provided.
