Hiring:
Counselors
As a counselor you will live, work, teach, eat, and play with campers and other counselors. You will live on Tent Row in a platform tent with four campers, teach activities, eat meals, have heartfelt conversations, create memories, and go on great adventures. Plan and lead two all camp evening activities. All the while you’ll build valuable experience and skills that will prove useful in everything you do in the future.

Some responsibilities and expectations:
Live with and care for four campers
Teach daily activities
Maintain a professional environment
Embrace the outdoors and a natural setting
Experience working with children preferred
Uphold Camp’s mission, philosophy, and beliefs
Commit to a full summer of life changing experiences
Department Heads
In addition to the responsibilities outlined for counselors, Department Heads are also responsible for the following:
Organize the department in a structured manner
Establish safety rules and procedures, and post them where campers can see them
Supervise the staff fairly
Observe and provide feedback to each staff member; be prepared to write an evaluation of staff members in the middle and at the end of each term
Make sure teaching practices are consistent and each camper is supervised at all times
Establish a rainy day plan and location with the help of the Head of Rainy Day Activities, and submit it to the Program Director BEFORE the beginning of each term
Be an active participant in the department during class time (you should never be seen just sitting and watching your staff and campers, unless you are legitimately observing them as part of the lesson plan)
Report to the Program Director two to three times per week
Approve any time off for staff members, ensuring that there is still enough coverage for proper supervision of the campers
Create a calendar of lesson plans and who is on time off to distribute to each of your staff members; assign a staff member to be in charge when you are on time off, providing her with a clear plan of action
Turn in term calendar of lessons as well as weekly lesson plans to the Program Director
Write a final report at the end of the summer
Staff Photographer
The staff photographer is responsible for capturing Camp memories and telling the story of the Camp and the story of the summer through photos, videos, blogs, and social media. Moreover, in this our 100th summer, you have the opportunity to tell the story of this momentous anniversary. Daily requirements include but are not limited to: creating a schedule, visiting classes, activities, and events to capture daily life around camp through the lens of a camera; Processing, editing, and uploading photos to our website and social media accounts; organizing photos into our Google drive; filming and editing videos for viewing at Camp and our website; writing blogs and creating social media content.
Working at Camp is physically demanding as you are on your feet all day, walking from activity to activity, up and down hills, along the river, and occasionally even getting paddled around the river in a canoe.
Staff photographers will live on Tent Row, in a canvas wall tent, near campers and counselors (you will not have campers in your tent and will not be responsible for campers).
Other requirements:
Outgoing and friendly disposition to create warmth and ease among your subjects
Understand “visual storytelling.”
Strong work ethic
Great time management
Self starter who can work independently on assignments and generate her own creative ideas
Strong communication skills
Familiarity with google drive
Familiarity with various social media platforms
Portfolio to include 10 action shots, 5 candid shots, 5 documentations shots, a writing sample, and an optional video (up to 3 minutes)
Preferred:
Experience attending or working at a summer camp or similar residential life situation
Experience in youth leadership
Experience with planning/execution/completion of projects under your leadership

Immersed in Nature
Live on the banks of the beautiful Greenbrier River and at the base of Greenbrier Mountain. Take in the morning fog on the mountain, spectacular sunsets, lightning bugs illuminating the tree line, and gaze in awe at a dark sky filled with thousand of stars. Hike the trails at Camp and explore the National Forests, trails, swimming holes, waterfalls, caves, and nearby Parks on your days off.
Training and Professional Development
All staff participate in our mandatory training program, including certification in First Aid and CPR if you’re not currently certified. Training is designed to give you the skills that will help you succeed throughout the summer.
During training, each staff member receives specific training for the activities she’ll teach that summer. Applicants with other certifications are eagerly welcomed including Lifeguard, Wilderness First Aid, Ropes/Challenge Course Facilitator, and Rifle Instructor.
During the summer we also hold supplemental In-Services for staff. These professional development events have included resume workshops, outside speakers from various industries, budgeting workshops, and more.
Working at Camp is a proven way to build your resume and gain an array of marketable skills that easily translate to any field or profession — skills like collaboration, communication, creativity, flexibility, leadership, event planning, lesson planning, public speaking, and so much more!

Counselors at Camp Alleghany commit to being “Fully Connected” to Camp Alleghany and the Camp community. This means being fully present and alive in the moment in an open-minded and open-hearted way. It also means limited access to your phone except on your days off. At camp we connect face-to-face with campers and staff members to build the community we cherish and embrace when we’re on the Greenbrier River.
