VISITOR EXPERIENCE SPECIALIST LEVEL I


 

Grand Canyon Conservancy (GCC) is the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park, raising private funds, operating retail shops within the park, and providing premier educational programs about the natural and cultural history of the region. Grand Canyon Conservancy’s mission is to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon Conservancy seeks Seasonal Visitor Experience Specialists (VES). This entry-level position in the GCC Interpretive Sales Program ensures that every visitor receives world-class service in GCC Park Stores, proactively sells merchandise, and recruits GCC Members. This on-site, seasonal, non-benefit eligible, non-exempt, full-time position reports to the Store Manager. The GCC Park Stores are open every day of the year (including holidays), and hours vary from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The summer season runs from April through October. Our winter season runs from October to April.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties vary with the workload and could include, but are not limited to, the tasks listed below.

  • Act as an ambassador for Grand Canyon and Grand Canyon Conservancy by proactively greeting visitors, answering questions, and graciously providing information about Grand Canyon National Park and GCC

  • Develop and maintain a broad knowledge of GCC products and proactively assist visitors with product selection and purchases to upsell whenever possible

  • Foster stewardship and inspire support for Grand Canyon by informing each visitor of GCC’s membership and donation programs, making it compelling and straightforward to become a member and donor

  • Meet or exceed sales and membership recruitment goals

  • Ensure the sales floor is fully stocked, all store areas, including the break-room and offices, are clean, and products are merchandised according to GCC guidelines and specifications

  • Assist store management in ensuring register transactions are processed efficiently

  • Accurately process sales using a computerized cash register system; reconcile cash drawer

  • Follow GCC Guidelines for maintaining professional and respectful communication with visitors, NPS, colleagues, vendors, etc.

  • Support management in maintaining a high level of morale by fostering a positive work environment

  • Attend NPS Ranger tours and GCC training programs when possible

  • Explain the Grand Canyon National Park Junior Ranger program to visitors and swear in Junior Rangers who have completed the requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-year customer service/retail experience

  • 1-year cash handling experience

  • Basic computer skills

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in any of GCC’s Park Stores

  • Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, a computerized cash register and payroll system

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standing for long periods, up to eight hours each day

  • Frequent, extended periods of repetitive hand motion required by the operation of a computerized cash register system

  • Reaching and bending while cleaning and stocking

  • Lifting book boxes weighing as much as 40 lbs.; pushing carts of product weighing up to 100 lbs.

  • Moving stock on hand trucks weighing up to 100 lbs. From delivery vans, in some cases over rough surfaces, stairs, or inclines, and through varying weather conditions

  • Ability to work at elevations more than 7,000-9,000 feet above sea level

  • Walking to restroom facilities located in buildings other than the Park Store

 

PROGRAM MANAGER GCCFI

As the official philanthropic and collaborative partner of Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon Conservancy’s mission is to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of the Grand Canyon. GCC raises private funds, operates retail shops within the park, and provides premier educational programs about the natural and cultural history of the region.

The Grand Canyon Conservancy Field Institute provides amazing immersive and educational adventures at the Grand Canyon—all officially designed and developed in partnership with Grand Canyon National Park. The Field Institute is an extension of Grand Canyon National Park and its commitment to education. Since its beginning in 1993, education has been at the core of our mission. Over the years, thousands of people have participated in hundreds of tours and classes at the Grand Canyon, and many of them are now GCC members, donors, and volunteers. GCC’s Field Institute (GCCFI) is seeking a Program Manager.

The GCCFI Program Manager leads program development, staff supervision, program budget oversight, risk management, and program logistics. Additional duties include coordinating with Grand Canyon National Park, ensuring smooth end-to-end program operations and customer satisfaction, and working as an instructor for multiday and day tour programs as needed. The GCCFI Program Manager Position is a hybrid, full-time, benefit-eligible position based either in Flagstaff, AZ, or at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The position is eligible for rental housing at the South Rim and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop long-range program strategies to support NPS interpretive and educational priorities, GCC mission and goals, and customer and revenue growth

  • Develop annual trips, itineraries, and partnerships to drive long-term growth and success, including coordination and review with NPS

  • Program financial planning, including annual budget development, monthly and quarterly revenue and expense management, inventory management, pricing strategies, and related financial and program reporting

  • Coordinate with GCC marketing team to develop annual digital and print marketing plans to deliver on revenue and customer goals

  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and annual review of all risk management policies, procedures, emergency protocols, and incident reporting

  • Create and maintain GCCFI Standard Operating Procedures

  • Ensure timely payment and invoice processing for vendors, contractors, and partners

  • Select professional contractors for FI Programming as needed

  • Provide leadership, prioritization, and workflow support for 2-3 full-time hourly staff to ensure smooth trip logistics and customer satisfaction

  • Identify and lead process improvement efforts across GCCFI's core operations, including reservation software, customer communications, NPS coordination, program marketing, departure and guide scheduling, and guide communication

  • Assist as a guide on day and multiday trips at the Grand Canyon as needed

TOTAL COMPENSATION GCC

provides a comprehensive benefits package including vacation and holiday pay, sick leave, Canyon Experience Days, employer-supplemented health benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and health savings account (HSA) plan, employer-paid long-term disability, and life insurance, employer-paid 401(k) retirement plan, and discounts in our retail stores and Grand Canyon Conservancy Field Institute offerings. The hiring salary range for the position is $62,000 to $65,000 annually.

TOTAL COMPENSATION

This is a Seasonal non-benefit eligible position. The starting wage for this position is $15.00 per hour. An RV is required for this position as housing is unavailable; full hook up sites are available for $50/month.  Electric and Propane are not included in site rent.
