International Program Instructor (Summer)


 

International Program Instructor

International Program Instructors mentor students as they travel and explore new locations, while gaining hands-on experience and earning academic credits. Instructors will lead programs based in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Bahamas. Each group will have 8-12 students with two Broadreach Instructors.

Instructors will manage the health and safety of students, maintain a positive attitude through challenging circumstances, lead games, participate in service-learning activities, facilitate inclusive group dynamics and demonstrate respectful travel.

Broadreach Adventures are fun, rewarding and demanding. Each program is between 12 and 21 days long.

2024 season starts June 7th and will conclude by August 5th.

Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or the ability to obtain the certification before summer. Broadreach hosts a WFR certification course June 1 to June 7.

  • Experience leading teens on multi-day programs in outdoor environments or outside of the U.S.

  • Strong desire to work closely with teens and young adults to educate and support their growth academically, physically and emotionally.

  • Group facilitation experience and an understanding of group dynamic and conflict resolution concepts.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage budget, program expenses, student documents, etc.

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • International travel experience.

  • Strong Spanish speaking skills, especially for placement on our programs based in Latin America.

  • Program leading or experience working with teens or young adults outside of the classroom.

  • College degree preferred.

  • Some programs require a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a manual car.


 

Skipper & Sailing Instructor (Summer)


 

Skippers teach sailing lessons, and along with their co-leaders, facilitate positive group dynamics, lead games, assist students with cooking and cleaning duties along with cultivating personal growth and leadership development in our students. Our staff prioritize safety and are energetic role models who excel in building meaningful relationships with their students. Our strongest instructors are flexible, team players who excel in quickly changing scenarios, while maintaining a supportive, fun, and cohesive community.

Contracts range from four to ten weeks in length from early June through late August.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed US Coast Guard Captain, Yachtmaster or equivalent experience.

  • Comfort operating a yacht over 45 feet from standard operations to sail training.

  • Small boat handling skills as staff regularly operate RIBs and small boats with 6hp to 50hp outboards.

  • Able to confidently maneuver in tight harbors and anchorages under power.

  • Understanding of basic yacht and diesel engine maintenance.

  • Experience in multi-day sailing trips/deliveries/chartering.

  • Passion for mentoring and motivating students.

  • Physically fit and able to participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, snorkeling, etc.

  • Able to attend staff training in St. Martin the first week of June.

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • Experience teaching sailing to teens or young adults or significant experience working with youth in a mentorship capacity.

  • Experience leading teens or young adults on multi-day programs.

  • Significant international travel experience.

  • Open availability from early June to mid-August increases chance of placement.

  • Wilderness First Responder certification or higher or willingness to obtain before program.


 

PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (Summer)


 

Dive instructors work alongside a marine biologist, skipper, or another dive instructor to teach diving, supervise students 24/7, facilitate group dynamics, lead games, assist students with cooking and cleaning duties and other program activities. 

Broadreach maintains a small group size of 12 students or less led by two instructors. Programs can be challenging for students and instructors, which makes a positive demeanor essential. 

Our strongest instructors are flexible, team players who excel in quickly changing scenarios, while maintaining a supportive, fun, and cohesive community.

Contracts usually range from June to August.

Qualifications:

  • PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification with active teaching status.

  • Previous experience working with teens or young adults, preferably in a camp or 24/7 setting.

  • Passion for mentoring and motivating students and fostering cultural understanding.

  • Great communication skills and a professional demeanor to serve as a Broadreach ambassador.

  • Specialty teaching certifications or willingness to obtain some of the following: underwater naturalist, boat diver, AWARE-coral reef conservation, night diver, wreck diver, deep diver, and more.

  • Able to attend staff training in early June in either North Carolina or St. Martin.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Program leading or experience working with teens or young adults outside of the classroom.

  • Significant international travel experience. Sailing experience ideal for our Caribbean programs. 

  • Open availability from early June to mid-August increases chance of placement.

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or willingness to obtain certification before programs begin strongly preferred. 

  • Some programs require a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a manual vehicle.

 

Watersports & Logistics Staff (Summer)


 

Watersports & Logistics staff support our sailing, scuba, and marine science programs in the Caribbean. This role is part logistics support and part teaching watersports. Instructors teach students to wakeboard, water ski, kneeboard, stand up paddle board, and dinghy sailing. Watersports Coordinator  also assists our Caribbean logistics team with projects such as boat preparations, coordinating on-island logistics, and other program tasks.

Programs can be challenging for students and instructors, which makes a positive demeanor essential. Our strongest instructors are flexible, team players who excel in quickly changing scenarios, while maintaining a supportive, fun, and cohesive community.

Contracts range from four to eight weeks in length from early June through mid-August.

 

Primary duties include, though are not limited to:

  • Teach small boat sailing and lead watersports activities for numerous programs.

  • Operate power boats during watersports activities and between islands.

  • Provide dockmaster and fleet coordinators with logistical support.

  • Help stock and prepare program boats for student arrival.

  • Assist program instructors by supervising students.

  • Conduct boat check-in/out with our partner charter company and equipment repair.

  • Maintain watersports equipment. 

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Small boat handling skills required as this position operates a center console RIB.  

  • Experience driving and towing (waterskiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding) beginner participants on a powerboat strongly preferred. Experience teaching pico sailing nice!

  • Group facilitation experience and an understanding group dynamics and conflict resolution concepts.

  • Physically fit and comfortable participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, snorkeling, etc. 

  • Great communication skills and a professional demeanor to serve as a Broadreach ambassador. 

  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills; able to work without direct supervision and adaptable to often changing, dynamic environments.

  • Demonstrated success working on diverse teams with a collaborative mindset.

  • Able to attend staff training in St. Martin in early June.

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • Experience working with teens or young adults, preferably in a camp setting. 

  • Outboard maintenance and knowledge, and other mechanical experience. 

  • Open availability from early June to mid-August increases chance of placement. 

  • Wilderness First Responder certification or higher or willingness to obtain before program.

 

Veterinary Medicine Instructor (Summer)


 

Instructors combine a college curriculum with adventure to create dynamic international learning experiences on our summer programs.

Broadreach runs immersive veterinary medicine programs for middle and high school students. Programs include a 12-day adventure in the Bahamas and a more in-depth 21-day veterinary science program in Costa Rica, where students earn college credits on their trip.

Our most successful instructors are positive, flexible, team players who are able to create a fun, cohesive and supportive community. Broadreach instructors are energetic and empathetic role models. They excel in building meaningful relationships with young adults and demonstrate being a respectful traveler. Groups typically have 8-12 students and are led by two Broadreach instructors. Instructors live and travel with their group of students, so this is a 24/7 role, with limited personal space.

Veterinary Medicine Instructors lead discussions and lectures. They guide students as they observe local partners, volunteer at wildlife centers, and explore animal science career paths. We provide our Veterinary Medicine Instructors with lesson plans to lead a college-level science course. Instructors are expected to use lectures, hands-on activities and demonstrations to relay animal science content.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Education Requirements:

    • Minimum master’s degree in animal science, or related field

    • Preferred: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

  • A passion for mentoring and inspiring students.

  • Significant international travel experience.

  • Physically fit and able to participate in adventure activities such as hiking, rafting, snorkeling, etc.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage program budgets, student documents and confirm logistics with local outfitters.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong Spanish language skills are preferred.

  • Travel experience in Latin America preferred.

  • Previous teaching/summer camp experience is a plus.

Our vet programs range from 12 to 21 days, and preference will be given to instructors who can lead multiple sessions throughout the summer. Our summer season runs from June through August.

New instructors are required to attend our staff week-long staff training, in late May/Early June.
